AN AMENDMENT to plans for a cliff-top cafe, east of North Berwick, has been approved.

Last October, East Lothian Council’s planning committee unanimously gave the green light to plans for the cafe at Castleton despite opposition from planning officials.

The cafe, called Drift, was initially given the go-ahead to trade for five years but an application lodged with the local authority for a one-year extension to that condition has now been authorised.

Owners Stuart and Jo McNicol “can’t wait” to get started, and hope that the business will open its doors on June 8.

They have taken on seven members of staff –one full-time – and are in the final stages of preparations. On Monday, Jo told the Courier: “It has all gone really well and we’re looking forward to opening. Word seems to be getting out about us now so that suggests we should be quite busy when we open.”

She also explained the inspiration behind the name, adding: “It is about people drifting in and out, with reference to the sea as well.”
