A BAKERY chain famous for its steak bakes and sausage rolls is getting ready to swap High Street for Market Street.

Greggs will move just 100 yards or so from 68 High Street to 29 Market Street, currently the home of Kesley’s Bookshop.

The bookshop, which has been a staple of Haddington for more than 25 years, will then move to the vacant former dancewear shop at 63 Market Street, where it was originally based.

A Greggs spokeswoman said: “We can confirm plans for our new shop on Market Street are progressing.

“Our High Street shop will close, with its fantastic team moving to the new shop.

“We look forward to welcoming customers into our-new look shop later this year.”

Plans were lodged by Greggs, which has more than 1,700 branches up and down the country, in January.

According to the plans: “Internally the premises are to be reconfigured and therefore planning permission is now sought for the cafe component to be moved from the back of the premises to the front of the premises.

“The remainder of the premises will be used for the storage, preparation and sale of the hot and cold food and food products sold by the company.”

Further changes will be made, with the positioning and size of the entrance doors altered, as well as painting the windows and doors.

Kesley’s Bookshop was opened by Simon Kesley and wife Susan in 1991 at 63 Market Street.

Then, in 2007, it moved across the road to its current home, with Susan opening the clothes shop Ivory next door.

No timescale has been given for the two businesses moving premises.

The town’s community council previously discussed the proposals and had no objections.
