MICHELIN-STAR chef Tom Kitchin will expand his business empire into East Lothian as he takes over The Golf Inn in Gullane, it has been confirmed.

However, it has also been confirmed that the business will be closed when the Scottish Open comes to the village as it undergoes a refurbishment.

A deal was completed this week that will see the award-winning chef, who runs four restaurants in Edinburgh alongside his wife Michaela, to branch out into East Lothian.

The Golf Inn will undergo a full refurbishment and remain closed for several months – including during the Scottish Open at Gullane Golf Club in July.

When the premises, which closed on April 22, finally re-opens, it will do so as The Bonnie Badger.

Mr Kitchin said: “My wife and I have dreamt of having a pub with rooms for years and we’ve always been particularly fond of the East Lothian area, having spent time here on family holidays with the kids.

"When this opportunity came up it just felt that it was meant to be.

"East Lothian has so much to offer and I can’t wait to get to know some local suppliers and farmers.

"We have always loved the feel of the old hotel and we want to ensure that we keep the heart of the building whilst enhancing the offering.

"Our aim is to create a welcoming and charming place for guests to enjoy good food and drink, which I hope the local community will embrace and enjoy.

"It will also be a place to escape for a day trip or a weekend break to experience the local scenery and beautiful setting that East Lothian has to offer."

Details of the opening are expected to be confirmed once the refurbishment is completed, but the Courier understands an autumn opening date is being targeted.
