NO DECISION has been taken on the future of Gullane Bowling Club, says its vice-president, despite rumours it is about to close.

Various social media posters claimed on Tuesday evening that the club, which opened in 1901, was under threat.

A post on Gullane News Group on Facebook suggested that the bowling club was to close imminently.

However, vice-president Michael Baxter told the Courier: “There has been no decision taken at the moment. Until there is an EGM, no decision can be taken.”

Mr Baxter, who is also the club’s secretary, confirmed that a dwindling membership had put the club’s long-term future in doubt.

“There are not enough members to support the running of the club,” he said.

“We are trying to find a solution but it has not been an easy time.”

Ward councillor Jeremy Findlay said on Wednesday that the potential closure of the club – which has 23 members – would be a “huge loss” to the village.

Mr Findlay, a former chairman of the village community council, added: “It is a great facility for the village. I would be very sorry to see it go.”

He pledged to investigate further while Mr Baxter said he would write to the councillor.

Billy Mellors, the county’s bowls development officer, said he was keen to do what he could to avoid the closure of the club.

He said: “It would be a massive blow to Gullane – they’ve lost a few businesses recently and if the club was to close it would be a big loss. I will speak to people at the club, the community council and East Lothian Council and see what can be done.”
