ABOUT 300 people turned out to celebrate the launch of Pride Saltire Festival at Cockenzie House and Gardens on Saturday.

The launch saw representatives from all areas of the community turn out in support of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) event.

And organisers were delighted by the turnout of local people and visitors from across the UK on the day.

There was plenty of music on offer, with singer Nick Shane performing in the house throughout the day and into the evening, as well as an emotional set by the Gay Men’s Chorus.

Scene Radio, Scotland’s LGBTI+ station, broadcast the day and community stalls were set up in the Willow Room.

Among groups represented at the event were armed forces, emergency services, charities, support groups and unions.

Pride Saltire chairman John Johnston was joined by Martin Whitfield, East Lothian MP, and county Provost John McMillan on the platform as they spoke about the importance of the event.

Mr McMillan told the audience: “We have pride, we have community, and now we have Pride in our community.”

Preston Lodge RFC’s 1st XV gave their support to the launch by wearing rainbow laces in their shoes as they took to the pitch against Kirkcaldy RFC at the Pennypit during Saturday’s launch.

Pride Saltire is now planning its first official day, which will be held on August 4 at Cockenzie House and Gardens.

Organisers said: “We have many ideas for our next event. We also look forward to supporting all the other new Prides in Scotland, and more importantly the LGBT+ youth.

“Such great things will come from these great children, in all aspects of life, whether it’s running a country, becoming a doctor, a lawyer, an architect or just taking over from us in the LGBT+ community in years to come!”

They thanked Cockenzie House and Gardens for their support.
