WEATHER warnings remain in place across East Lothian as more snow and ice is forecast before the weekend.

Yellow warnings were issued by the Met Office for the county yesterday and overnight heavy snow fell, with several inches lying on higher ground.

Gritters were out on the priority roads during the night, with other roads and pathways targeted from 5amby East Lothian Council’s transport team.

In total, 15 gritters and 10 mini-gritters were deployed across the county’s 571 miles of roadways to keep people on the move.

The council urged residents to be cautious on roads and paths as weather experts warned freezing conditions would continue through to Saturday.

A spokesperson said: “Please take care on residential streets and secondary routes.”

The Met Office said it expected more snow showers in parts of East Lothian over the next few days with temperatures unlikely to rise above 3C.

Saturday is expected to be dry and sunny but temperatures could fall to -3C.

The cold snap is expected to break on Sunday but weather experts said that would bring wet and windy weather as the temperatures begin to rise to above freezing early next week.
