EAST Lothian looks set to take a battering from the elements over the next few days, with the Met Office issuing weather warning for the county for heavy snow, ice and wind.

Two separate snow weather warnings cover the period from now up until 9am on Thursday morning; the ice warning is until 6pm on Wednesday; while the wind warning lasts from 9pm on Wednesday until 1pm on Thursday.

All four warnings are yellow 'be aware' warnings.

The current forecast for East Lothian is that temperatures will drop below freezing tonight (Monday) and snow will start to fall overnight.

Snow is expected to fall in the county throughout the whole of Tuesday, frequently heavy, before stopping overnight from Tuesday into Wednesday.

Temperatures are unlikely to rise above freezing all day on Tuesday.

Heavy snow is then expected to fall again on Wednesday night into Thursday, though not anything like the sustained heavy snowfall expected for Tuesday.

Although the snow may fall as sleet or hail by the coast, further inland the volume of snowfall on Tuesday is expected to be extensive, with a possibility of travel disruption and power cuts.

The Met Office also warns there is a chance that remote rural communities will be temporarily cut off.

People are advised to be extremely careful on the roads.
