JACK and Olivia came out on top as the most popular baby names in 2017, both in East Lothian and across Scotland.

New parents in the county chose Jack for their baby boys more than any other name in 2017, making it the top baby name for the second year running.

In 2016, Jack was in tied first with Harris, but in 2017 Harris fell out of favour and did not even make the top 10.

Olivia took over as the top name for girls from last year’s favourite Sophie, rising from a lowly eighth in 2016, while Sophie also dropped out of the top 10 altogether.

The second most popular name for a boy in East Lothian in 2017 was Jacob, which rose one place, while Isla was second top for girls, coming up the ranks from fifth place.

The top 10 boys’ names in East Lothian in 2017 were: 1 Jack; 2 Jacob; 3= Alexander, Charlie; 5= Alfie, Archie, Freddie, Leo, Lewis, Rory, Samuel. Girls’ names: 1 Olivia; 2 Isla; 3 Maisie; 4 Ava; 5= Amelia, Lily, Poppy; 8= Daisy, Hannah; 10= Charlotte, Ellie, Emily, Jessica, Lucy.

Across Scotland the top three boys’ names for 2017 were Jack, Oliver and then James. The top girls’ names nationally were Olivia, followed by Emily and then Isla.
