FADED street signs which have caused delivery and taxi drivers to get lost in a Glasgow housing estate are to be replaced.

It is understood that around 30 street signs have fell off or become faded due to the sunlight within the Briarcroft and Brookfield housing estates in Robroyston.

The issue has caused problems for residents for a number of the years but now the community council has managed to get Glasgow City Council to look at the problem.

Members of the group met with Councillor Graham Campbell and a representative from Glasgow City Council's Land and Environmental Services for a walk around the areas effected.

The site visit took several hours and it was agreed that the condition of the street signs were poor.

Ian Aitken, who is chairman of Robroyston Community Council, said: "People had been using the MyGlasgow app to report the issue but nothing was being done to resolve the problem.

"Councillor Campbell arranged a site visit with a representative from Glasgow City Council's Land and Environmental Services and that is when they decided it was quite bad."

He added: "I don't think the council realised how bad the signs were until the site visit. You can report these things but they can get overlooked unless someone comes out to see it for themselves."

The Evening Times understands that the signs, which were first erected around 20 years ago, will be replaced within three to six months.

In addition, signs which have been erected low to the ground and are obstructed by cars parking will also be removed.

Councillor Campbell said: "I am delighted that they will be replaced. It is about time, it was the first thing I noticed when I was canvassing during the election.

"Some of the low down signs which are obstructing the pavements are pointless and will also be removed."

Glasgow City Council confirmed that they will replace the street signs.

A spokeswoman for Glasgow City Council said: “We have been out to assess the street signs in the area. There a number that need replaced and we will prioritise those.”
