ALMOST 900 pupils and members of staff were evacuated from Dunbar Grammar School this morning (Tuesday) after a fire broke out.

Firefighters from the town were joined by colleagues from Haddington and Tranent at the Summerfield Road school shortly after 9.05am.

East Lothian Courier:

A spokeswoman for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service confirmed there had been a fire on the ground floor and crews were working with a high-pressure hose reel and breathing apparatus to tackle the blaze.

Pupils and staff were evacuated while the fire was tackled and were outside for about an hour.

East Lothian Courier:

The all-clear was later given and pupils returned to lessons.

No injuries have been suffered and it is not yet known if any damage has been caused to the school.

An investigation to determine the cause of the fire, which is understood to have originated in the boys' toilets, is under way.

A spokeswoman for Police Scotland told the Courier: "Enquiries into how the fire started are ongoing.

"Anyone with any information is asked to contact Police Scotland via 101 quoting incident number 0712 of October 3."

A spokeswoman for East Lothian Council added: "This morning, on Tuesday 3 October just after 9am, a small fire was reported on the ground floor at Dunbar Grammar School, to which the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service attended.

"The school was evacuated and all staff and  pupils were accounted for.

"There were no reported injuries, and pupils and staff were allowed back into the building after the fire was extinguished.

"We understand that the police are currently investigating the cause and enquiries are ongoing.”
