NINE youths have been charged after a 16-year-old schoolboy was attacked by a gang on rugby fields during a lunchbreak.

The 16-year-old was set upon by a gang of up to 25 boys on the pitch near Ross High School, Tranent, on Monday, September 4, just one week after a 14-year-old girl suffered a fractured jaw and concussion in an assault at Knox Academy, Haddington.

Police said the incident in Tranent had led to nine youths aged between 14 and 16 being charged.

The victim's dad told the Courier 25 boys were involved in the attack on his son and videos of the incident were then circulated.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: "Nine youths have been charged following an assault on a 16-year-old male at a high school in Tranent on Monday, September 4.

"The boys aged between 14 and 16 will now be subject of a report to the Children's Reporter."

This week the Courier revealed police are investigating an assault on a 14-year-old girl at Knox Academy, Haddington.

It comes less than a year after another pupil at the same school attacked a fellow student with acid.

Emily Bowen, now a former pupil of the school, was jailed for 21 months at Edinburgh Sheriff Court in July, for the attack which left her victim Molly Young scarred for life.

Bowen had poured drain cleaner into her victim's viola case.

When Miss Young took the case down, the acid then spilled onto her legs.
