A RECENTLY installed wooden shelter has been used by youths as a drinking den.

A wooden ‘haven’ was created at both campuses of Dunbar Primary School and designed to be used by pupils for working, reading and playing outside.

However, members of the town’s community council heard that the shelter at the John Muir campus had been used outside of school time as well.

A report from Constable Gavin Ross said: “Complaints were received on a number of evenings of youths using the new gazebo in the John Muir Campus, drinking alcohol and leaving a mess.

“We are including it in patrols but no youths traced to date.”

The school received £10,000 of funding from the National Lottery for the project.

Earlier this summer, Helen Gillanders, headteacher at the primary school, said: “We are delighted with our new outdoor spaces, which will provide a space for outdoor learning, quiet reading and lots of different curriculum activities, and will also be used by parents and the wider community.”
