Patrick Roberts is back after all.

And this time around, it is in the Champions League where he really look to make an impact for the Parkhead side.

It was a curious thing the way he was bombarded on social media about getting back to Celtic – and while I know zero about Twitter and Facebook and whatever other fangled sites there are – it shows you that in some ways they can have a positive effect too.

It does show that it is an entirely different level of media intensity too.

The boy wants to be back and the club were desperate to get him back so you have to think that it is an arrangement that will work out well.

You just never know whether there is a long-term, permanent move on the cards but certainly it is an avenue that will have been explored by the club. For now it is a loan move and I am sure that we will be revisiting it ten months’ down the line.

However, he is back in and it will be interesting to see what kind of reaction it causes too.

James Forrest is a player that I think has been in pretty good form over the qualification campaign – it was his goal in Rosenborg that played a huge part in Celtic getting back into the group stages of the Champions League – and I am sure that he won’t be too willing to move over and relinquish his jersey.

For Roberts, though, at 20, the challenge is to step up now to the next level.

Physically, he can get stronger. He will still have things to learn about when to do certain things, when not to, and when to keep it simple. It is his decision-making that he will look to work on but certainly in the last three or four months of last season he really showed that he has the raw materials to play at a good level.

His challenge now will be to make that impression again on the Champions League. We saw it last season against Manchester City when he scored down there and this is the stage that he will feel he will want to make a mark again.

But it helps that although he is a new signing he is not a new player.

He doesn’t just know the club and his team-mates, he knows his environment and there should be nothing to prevent him from settling straight back into.

Fitness wise there might still be a bit to do given that he has missed a chunk of football, albeit that he has been training.

I do think that he also offers a versatility, as we witnessed last season, when he could step in and play striker if need be, so it is definitely a good signing. I suspect too that it was one that Rodgers was keen to get in.

As we write, Odsonne Edouard appears to be closing in on a move to Celtic and you would have to say that he fits the bill perfectly.

I have been saying since January that even with two fit strikers at the club that the Parkhead side needed a third strike and Edouard is the type of players that slots in nicely.

He is a young guy with a point to prove, looking for game time and you would have to feel that he fits the mould for Celtic; he is young and wants to develop and if there is an option to buy agreed as has been reported then it means that the club cannot really lose.

If he comes in and does well then they know they can keep him and if it doesn’t work out the way they want, then there has not been a big outlay.

But I have to say that although I was never involved in the transfer window in its current format, I can guess at the chaos that goes on behind the scenes trying to get deals done.

I know first-hand how tough it can be to get some signings done in the first place, let along when the clock is ticking and there is a domino effect in terms of other clubs and players and everyone wanting to keep options open until the very last minute.

I also think there is no question this summer that Neymar’s move to PSG had a trickle down effect all the way through Europe. Some of the fees that have been paid out are just crazy and when it comes to salary levels and transfers, there is no doubt there is a real kickback from Neymar.

I always said I played at the right time – fair makes you wonder, though!
