A HUGE diversion awaits night-time traffic heading north on the A1 at the start of next week as roadworks take place on the road in East Lothian.

A resurfacing scheme is taking place on the westbound (northbound) carriageway of the A1 at Little Pinkerton, near Dunbar, overnight for two nights, from 8pm to 6.30am, on the evenings of Monday-Tuesday and Tuesday-Wednesday next week.

The work is taking place from the start of the dual carriageway near the A1087 junction to Spott Road Roundabout, Dunbar.

However, an extensive diversion is in place for traffic travelling northbound from England that will take them off the A1 at Berwick-upon-Tweed and only rejoin at Old Craighall.

To allow the work to take place there will be a full road closure of the A1 northbound with a signed diversion route in operation.

Northbound traffic will be diverted onto the A6105 (Duns Road) at the Berwick bypass to join the A697 at Carfraemill.

From here, vehicles will follow the A68 to the A720 City of Edinburgh Bypass at Sheriffhall Roundabout, before continuing to the Old Craighall Roundabout to re-join the A1.

The £44,000 scheme has been planned in consultation with Transport Scotland, Traffic Scotland, the emergency services, Scottish Borders Council, East Lothian Council and Midlothian Council.
