THOUSANDS of homes were plunged into darkness after a power cut shortly after 10pm last night.

Residents in Tranent and surrounding areas were left without power shortly after 10pm after a fault at the town's substation.

ScottishPower confirmed "a few thousand" people would have been affected by the fault but said everyone was back to normal within 20 minutes.

A spokesperson said: "We had reports at 10.10pm of a fault and many customers were only off for a few minutes, while some experienced a flickering of lights.

"Our engineers were quickly on the scene and everyone was back by 10.30pm.

"We apologise for any inconvenience this caused."
