EXTRA police patrols are being sent out in Prestonpans after thieves targeted a string of properties breaking into sheds and garages.

Garden tools, golf clubs and a toolbox were among items stolen over two nights in the town.

The break-ins overnight on Sunday and on Monday take the number of outhouses in Prestonpans broken into since the middle of June to 26.

The most recent incidents saw sheds broken into on Grange Crescent West on Sunday night and on Acheson Drive on Monday.

A third shed was broken into on Northfield Gardens and a garage in Blink O'Forth was broken into overnight on Monday.

A further break-in was reported on Nimmo Avenue on Monday night when police say a white van was seen in a private road close by.

Police confirmed they received 22 reports of break-ins to sheds in residents gardens in the town between June 13 and Saturday, August 6, with items including bicycles, tools and sports equipment stolen.

Officers are following a positive line of inquiry but are also now asking anyone who saw or heard anything suspicious in these areas to get in touch.

Police Scotland said additional patrols will be deployed in Prestonpans in the immediate future.

Community Inspector Andrew Harborow of Tranent police station said: “We are asking local people to work with us to bring these suspects to justice.

“Please do not hesitate to call us if you hear anything suspicious through the night or see anyone acting suspiciously around gardens and outbuildings.

“I’d also recommend that people check they have good security measures in place on their sheds and garages. Extra advice can be found on the Police Scotland website at the link below.”
