A NORTH Berwick pub is in the running for a prestigious award.

The Ship Inn, on the town’s Quality Street, has been shortlisted for the Pub Spy of the Year Award at the Scottish Bar and Pub Awards – formerly known as the Dram Awards.

Niall Middleton, who runs the pub are “delighted” to have been nominated.

Niall, who lives in the town, told the Courier: “We didn’t know anything about it before the spy-test or even afterwards until we got a letter in.

“It is recognition for the work we do – we’ve set our stall out and we work hard – but this is nice. It is nice for the staff as well.”

Niall will find out if the pub has been successful at an awards ceremony at the Hilton Hotel in Glasgow on August 15.

Mr Middleton, who has been at the helm for the last five years, added: “We’ve been given two free tickets so we’ll be going along.

“It should be a good night.”

The pub – the only one from East Lothian nominated for an award – is up against three others in the shortlist for the title.

Others in the running are West Port in St Andrews, The Fox and Hounds in Houston in Johnstone, and The Birds and The Bees in Stirling.
