Elizabeth Henderson, 83, from North Berwick, was a passenger in a car driving on the road when it was involved in a collision with an oncoming vehicle west of the Archerfield Estate.

The 53-year-old driver of the other car, who is understood to live in France and been holidaying in the area, has been charged in connection with the crash, which happened shortly after 10.30am on Wednesday.

Mrs Henderson's husband Bill, 89, remains in hospital while an elderly family friend, who was also in the couple's car, is also in hospital in a serious condition.

Mrs Henderson's family paid tribute to a "much loved" wife and mother.

In a statement, they said: "Elizabeth was a much loved wife to Bill, mother to Jude and Neil, and a respected member of the North Berwick community. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her.”

Mrs Henderson was injured when the red Volkswagen Golf she was travelling in was involved in a collision with a blue Volkswagen Golf between Dirleton and Gullane on Wednesday.

She was taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh for treatment, however she sadly passed away on Friday.

Police said the female driver of the other vehicle involved and her passengers sustained minor injuries in the collision.

She has now been charged and a report has been sent to the procurator fiscal.
