A SOAP maker has struck gold after creating a shaving soap made from Prosecco.

Karin Anderson launched Miel Botanicals less than six months ago and clinched a top award at the Janey Loves Platinum Awards for her handmade Prosecco and rose shave soap.

The Innerwick soap maker has been busy creating a range of soaps, including a craft beer shave soap using Knops craft beer from the East Lothian microbrewery at Archerfield Walled Garden, from her home.

Karin said: “I’m delighted. I’m excited. I created these Miel soaps last year and I began selling them earlier this year, so to get this prestigious award less than six months after starting selling feels incredible.”

Karin began making the soaps in 2015 but only began selling them this April.

She was driven to create her unique shaving soaps by irritated skin caused by mass-produced products.

She was also dismayed that so many shaving foams were packaged in aerosol cansm which are tricky to recycle.

“I realised that using a traditional, long-lasting shaving soap, simply packaged, would save on these aerosol cans going to landfill,” said Karin.

Miel Botanicals handmade soaps and salves use locally sourced botanicals, milks, beeswax and honey.

Miel means ‘honey’ in Spanish and stands for ‘Made in East Lothian’.

Men are using the Prosecco and rose shaving soap for facial shaves, and women are using it for leg shaves.

Now, Karin has plans to sell more of her products on the back of the award.

She said: “Winning this award, and getting great comments from people who have used the Miel Botanical’s soaps, gives me the confidence to see if I can go from selling online to getting the products into some East Lothian shops.”
