MORE than 700 people have been learning more about a wind farm in the Lammermuir hills.

Community Windpower and BeGreen Dunbar opened the doors to Aikengall Windfarm at the end of last month.

The windfarm, south of Innerwick, is expected to have more than 50 turbines when the various phases are complete.

Everyone in attendance had the opportunity to explore the windfarm, with further activities ranging from archery and an outdoor climbing wall to balloon modelling and beat the goalkeeper on offer on the day.

A Community Windpower spokeswoman said: “There was also a variety of stands and stalls on offer both inside and outside of the marquee with local crafts and produce. Home Energy Scotland were also on hand to answer any questions, as well as local charities including Dunbar Parish Church and the Dunbar Colts 2004 Football team, who raised £300 on their stall.

“A particular favourite was the animal handling sessions. Becky from Animates was on hand with her snakes, lizards and a giant millipede; it’s safe to say a lot of people overcame their snake fear that day!”

It was also a good day for a young pupil from Innerwick Primary School, who was presented with her prize after winning the open day poster competition earlier in the year, with her artwork chosen to promote the event.

The youngster, named Jennifer, was awarded a framed blown-up picture of her artwork, a mini turbine, mouse mat and other windfarm-related goodies.

The spokeswoman added: “Community Windpower are delighted that the day was such a success with a high turnout of visitors, a huge variety of stalls and activities on offer.”
