A VILLAGE’S part-time Post Office could be turned into a cafe under plans being considered by East Lothian Council.
Fidra Stores Post Office, on Dirleton’s Main Road, has been earmarked for transformation by Robert Doris.
The proposals, which are currently with the local authority’s planning department, have been discussed by Dirleton Village Association’s (DVA) committee.
Tom Drysdale, who represents the village on Gullane Area Community Council and is a member of the committee, said the feeling was that it would be a benefit to the village if the plans were given the go-ahead.
He said: “We want to encourage that sort of commercial development in the village.
“As you may be aware, there is very little in the way of facilities.
“The only downside is we assume the Post Office will close.”
Currently, the Post Office is open on a Tuesday and Thursday morning.
However, it now looks likely that it will cease altogether, with village residents likely facing a trip to North Berwick to use a Post Office.
Drawings included with the planning application indicate the Post Office and retail area at the building would be turned into a cafe.
Mr Drysdale added: “The ideal situation would be if [the Post Office] could be combined into the cafe but we accept space is very limited.”
