Bystanders were astonished to see a car hanging over the harbour wall at Fisherrow in Musselburgh last Thursday.

It is believed the owner of the Vauxhall Insignia was attending a funeral reception at The Quay complex situated nearby.

The incident happened around 4.45pm.

One bystander, who did not want to be named, told the Courier: "I arrived at Musselburgh Harbour to meet some motorcycle friends and was astonished to see a car hanging precariously over the harbour wall.

"The police arrived as did a recovery truck shortly after, and the owner was clearly in distress. Luckily they were not in the car at the time. The owner told me the car was parked with the handbrake on and rolled into and over the wall by itself."

He said the car was driven straight on to the recovery truck.

A spokesman for Police Scotland said: "A Vauxhall Insignia was seen to be half on, half off the harbour, however, it did not go into the water. It was eventually safely recovered by crane. No one was within the car and no one was injured."
