A MOTORIST drove for more than one mile the wrong way along the A1 before being pulled over by police.
Officers received a call from a member of the public about the female driver who was driving westbound on the eastbound carriageway between Prestonpans and Musselburgh.
They said the incident, which happened last Wednesday (May 17), was reported shortly after 10.30pm.
Police said the driver, who was in her seventies, joined the motorway from the Bankton junction and was stopped by police who intervened at the A199 Dolphingstone flyover.
Inspector Richard Latto of the Road Policing Unit said: "Both the driver and passenger were thankfully unharmed, although very shaken by this experience, but this could have had serious or even fatal consequences.
"My sincere thanks go to the member of the public for getting in touch with us so quickly. I'd urge anyone with concerns over driver behaviour to pull over, when it's safe to do so, and call 999 if they believe a crime may be ongoing or there is a risk to life.
"Partners have already carried out joint assessments of these junctions, including assessing all signage relating to directional decision making, however we're urging the public to exercise caution and pay due care and attention to all signage when they join a dual carriageway."
