CRASH barriers were put in place outside Haddington Police Station today as security levels across East Lothian were increased.

Police Scotland said the move was one of a number of measures being implemented nationwide as the country was put on high alert following Monday night's bombing in Manchester.

Parking outside the police station in Haddington was also suspended as officers stood guard at its front entrance.

Police confirmed additional "reassurance" patrols would be out and about in county communities as part of the increased security.

However they stressed there was no specific threat to the county.

East Lothian Council is also understood to have implemented additional security advice for staff at public buildings.

And organisers of this weekend's Edinburgh Marathon Festival, which will bring thousands of runners into the county, said they had been working closely with police to ensure safety on Sunday was paramount.

Neil Kilgour, race director, said: "The Edinburgh Marathon Festival works very closely with Police Scotland and other partner agencies to ensure that all relevant safety precautions are taken over the course of the weekend.

"The safety of our runners, their supporters and the general public is our number one priority."
