POLICE are appealing for witnesses after thieves forced their way into a Co-op store in Tranent overnight before making off with a haul of cigarettes and alcohol.

The store, on Brotherstone Way, was closed this morning (Wednesday) after the raid, which was discovered by staff who arrived to open up the shop.

It is believed the robbery was carried out around 12.30am.

Staff were in the shop this morning and parts of the glass entrance could be seen to have been damaged during the break-in however the doors remained closed as the clear-up inside was carried out.

Parents heading to Windygoul Primary School this morning were being warned on social media that the store was closed, in case they planned to buy their children a playtime snack or lunch en route.

Newly-elected Tranent, Wallyford and Macmerry councillor Colin McGinn posted on Facebook: "Co-op Windygoul closed this morning folks another smash and grab break in.

"If you are planning on picking up snack etc for youngsters before school I would make other plans.

"Please share folks it will avoid parents some stress this morning."

The news brought an angry response from people who branded the thieves "scum".

Police said their investigation into the break-in was ongoing.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: "Police in East Lothian are appealing for witnesses following a break-in to a shop in Tranent.

"After entry was forced a quantity of cigarettes and alcohol was stolen from inside.

"Inquiries are ongoing to trace those responsible and anyone with information is asked to contact police immediately."
