THE prospect of reducing the speed limit on one of the busiest roads in Dunbar is to be considered by East Lothian Council.

The town’s community councillors discussed the idea of dropping the speed limit from 30mph to 20mph on Kellie Road, which is home to one of the campuses of the town’s primary school, earlier this year.

Currently, almost every street to the south of the East Coast rail line is at the lower speed limit, with Kellie Road being one of the exceptions, alongside Spott Road.

Members heard that concerns about the speed limit had been brought up at a meeting of the school’s parent council.

A number of parents highlighted concerns that the street was not only busy at certain times of the day, when children were making their way to and from school, but also that it was confusing for drivers, who saw the majority of streets were 20mph.

Community councillor Herbert Coutts, who has led a campaign for the lowered speed limit to be rolled out through the vast majority of the town, told members he had met recently with Councillor Michael Veitch and officials from East Lothian Council, where it was said that consideration would be given to dropping the speed limit on Kellie Road.

A spokeswoman for East Lothian Council said: “It was put forward as a proposal and the council are now in consultation with a number of local community groups, as well as the community council, to see if they are looking at the whole of Kellie Road to be included in a future experimental traffic order.”

If an experimental traffic order is put in place, the results of that would be considered before the reduced speed limit would be made permanent.

Previously, former Dunbar Grammar School headteacher Will Collin noted the potential change in speed limit would not substantially add to journey times.
