LONG-SERVING councillor Jim Gillies was the big shock as the results were unveiled at the East Lothian Council election moments ago.

Mr Gillies lost his seat in the new Tranent, Wallyford and Macmerry ward, although Labour did see two councillors elected.

The ward, which saw boundaries altered so Ormiston and Pencaitland were moved into the Haddington and Lammermuir ward, was previously the Fa'side ward.

Despite Mr Gillies missing out, Labour did see two candidates elected with Fiona Dugdale and Colin McGinn finishing second and fourth respectively.

Also elected was the SNP's Kenny McLeod, who secured the most votes, while the Conservatives were also celebrating as Gordon Mackett became the fourth councillor in the ward.

The results meant there was no place for Alexander Graham (Liberal Democrats), Jimmy Haddow (Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition) or Linda Watson (SNP).

  • Kenny McLeod (SNP) - 1,540
  • Fiona Dugdale (Labour) - 1,272
  • Gordon Mackett (Conservative) - 986
  • Colin McGinn (Labour) - 958
  • Jim Gillies (Labour) - 837
  • Linda Watson (SNP) - 464
  • Alexander Graham (Lib Dems) - 159
  • Jim Haddow (STUSC) - 63

With the results so far, East Lothian Council is made up of: five Labour councillors (Andy Forrest, Willie Innes, Fiona O'Donnell, Colin McGinn and Fiona Dugdale), four SNP councillors (Stuart Currie, John Williamson, Neil Gilbert and Kenny McLeod), and three Conservative councillors (Katie Mackie, Lachlan Bruce and Gordon Mackett).

A further ten councillors are still to be elected over the North Berwick Coastal, Haddington and Lammermuir and Dunbar and East Linton wards.
