COMMUNITY fundraiser Scott Glynn could be celebrating a double win as he heads out on the road for his marathon Walk With Scott next week – despite battling liver cancer.

Scott, who is holding his fifth charity walk, this time entitled Walk With Scott Scot-a-thin 2017, next Saturday (May 13), has been nominated for two local hero awards.

The awards ceremony is being held in Edinburgh’s Assembly Rooms next Friday evening (May 12), on the eve of the marathon trek.

This year, more than 150 Scotters are expected to join him as they take on the 26-mile walk around the county.

Money raised will be used by the Walk With Scott Foundation to buy Rempods for care homes and day centres in the county.

The dementia-friendly Rempods are designed to create pop-up reminiscence rooms which bring back memories for people with the condition and can vary from an old-fashioned pub or train to a beach scene.

Scott, who is battling liver cancer and is on the transplant waiting list, will tackle this year’s walk accompanied by a bicycle in case he receives a call to the hospital.

He admitted he had swithered about taking part in the walk himself because of his situation but had decided on a back-up.

He said: “I have decided that I will be doing the walk, but I will be pushing my bike round. This is for two reasons – number one is if the pain gets too much, I can take a wee breather on the bike, and number two is if I get the phone call, I will not be too tired to face the transplant operation.”

Scott has appealed to everyone taking part in next weekend’s walk to make it a family stroll rather than a speedy walk so that everyone is able to enjoy it.

He said: “I know it’s hard when you’re a fast walker to slow down a wee bit, but please just try. Slow down to speak to newcomers, make new friends, help the slower ones around the course.

“There are no medals to be gained, only new friends.”

This year’s walk starts at 8am sharp from Preston Lodge Rugby Club in Prestonpans, heading out through Haddington, Pencaitland, Whitecraig and Musselburgh before returning to the town for a buffet and disco celebration.
