POLICE have contacted relatives of missing Edinburgh mum Louise Tiffney following Sunday night's discovery of human remains at the Gosford Estate, near Longniddry.

Louise, a mother of two, disappeared from her home in Dean Village in 2002 after an argument with her then teenage son Sean Flynn.

Extensive searches were carried out in East Lothian after police said Flynn had made a call from Tranent the day after his mother's disappearance, despite claiming he was in Edinburgh at the time.

It is understood the Gosford Estate  was one of a number of rural woodland areas searched by officers following the 43-year-old's disappearance.

In 2005, Flynn, then 21, went on trial for his mother's murder but the jury returned a not proven verdict.

Since then the case has remained open as a missing person's inquiry.

Police Scotland confirmed it had contacted the Tiffney family as a 'courtesy' and said it would contact the families of any other missing persons if it became necessary.

It is understood discussions with the family were triggered by the East Lothian connection and not through any forensic evidence at this stage.

Mrs Tiffney's relatives live in the county with mum Mary living in Ormiston.

The road outside the entrance to the Gosford Estate remains closed today as investigations continue.
