DIRLETON Fete and Games is in “serious danger” of not taking place this year.

Organisers told the Courier a shortage of volunteers to help organise the event, which takes place every June, now mean it is likely the event will not go ahead in the summer.

A meeting has been arranged for tomorrow (Wednesday) to see if the century-old event can be saved.

Dirleton Village Association (DVA) helps to run the event and was keen to see a good turnout at the meeting.

A DVA spokeswoman told the Courier: “Dirleton desperately needs to attract more of its villagers to join a committee to help organise the Dirleton Fete and Games for this summer; otherwise the event, which has taken place for over 100 years, will disappear.

“Traditionally, the event has relied on ‘older’ village residents to do the upfront organising, but there is now a need for younger residents to get involved, not just on the day but with the important background preparations so crucial to a successful event.

“Unless more villagers can be persuaded to join the organising committee for the event, then it is likely it will not take place.”

In the past, the event has been a popular fun day, featuring games, a dog show, barbecue and children’s rides.

The event raises money for local good causes and the village association was keen to point out the impact of any potential cancellation.

The spokeswoman added: “Funds raised by the fete are used to decorate Dirleton’s Christmas tree and lights, and provide financial assistance with the village hanging baskets.

“Should the event disappear, that will mean the local good causes (including the school) and all the local charities that it supports will suffer.”

The meeting will take place in Dirleton Kirk hall from 7.30pm on Wednesday and anyone who feels they can help out is encouraged to attend.
