A KIND-HEARTED mum is getting ready to do her bit to help a specialist hospital unit that cared for her baby boy.

Stephanie Hastie is hosting a charity disco in March before getting on her bike and cycling from Dunbar High Street to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh in aid of the Simpson’s Special Care Babies Unit.

The 23-year-old wanted to thank the Capital-based good cause for its help when she had second child Innes last year.

Stephanie said: “My son was so ill when he was born.

“Innes was ventilated as well and it was quite hard.

“The staff do a great job and I have never experienced anything like that before or heard people talking about them.

“You see it on the television but you do not realise how much work they do until you are there yourself.”

Stephanie, of the town’s Floors Terrace, gave birth to Innes, who is now six months old, last June.

The youngster spent the first fortnight of his young life in intensive care and Stephanie was determined to do something to say thank you to the staff at the unit for all their hard work.

She is planning a charity disco in Dunbar Royal British Legion, on High Street, on March 24, with a disco provided by Ecosse Entertainment.

Former Dunbar Primary School and Grammar School pupil Stephanie, who also has a daughter called Emily, added: “Simpson’s gave me the idea of doing a charity disco.

“I’ve never done anything like that before and I was not sure if it would work out or not.

“I put it on Facebook and got a good response for that and I have had lots of people I don’t even know getting in touch about booking tables.”

A number of raffle prizes have also been donated by kind-hearted local businesses, as well as four of the country’s top football teams – Hibs, Hearts, Rangers and Celtic – doing their bit and donating prizes.

As if that was not enough, a fortnight later, she will be joined by two close friends in getting on their bikes and cycling 32 miles from her hometown to the hospital in the Capital.

Stephanie said: “I had picked to do the cycle first – if I had known I was going to get such a response for the disco I would have just left it!”
