A COMMUNITY councillor has called for two Haddington monuments to be given a spring clean.

Chris McEwan told fellow community councillors that both the Haddington War Memorial, outside St Mary’s Parish Church, and The Goats (pictured) were in need of a bit of a sprucing up.

The issue was raised at the group’s meeting last month during a discussion about local priority funding.

The money is given to community councils by East Lothian Council, with a view to it being spent in the community.

Mr McEwan said: “Maybe we should use some [of] the money to see about getting the memorial cleaned.”

He added The Goats, to the rear of the former George Hotel, at the junction of High Street and Hardgate, could do with a bit of work and had suffered “a few dents and knocks” over the years.

Last year, it was suggested the iconic statue be moved to the front of the building as part of plans to widen footpaths on High Street.

A plaque at the statue notes it was created by Norwegian Dyre Vaa and was commissioned by Tandberg Electronics in 1978.

The goat is the emblem of Haddington and appears on the town’s coat-of-arms, with the association with the town dating back to the late 1200s, although it is unclear why the symbol was adopted.
