HARRIS, Jack and Sophie are the top baby names in East Lothian for 2016, replacing Oliver and Emily.

Early results from the National Register of Statistics have revealed the names were the most popular this year.

Last year’s favourite for boys, Oliver, was pushed back down the table to ninth place, while Emily was just pipped and came in second.

Nationwide, Jack remained the favourite boys’ name across Scotland, while Olivia replaces Emily as the nation’s favourite name for a girl.

The tables, released this week, showed Harris and Jack were the joint top names for boys in East Lothian, followed by Charlie, Jacob, James and Noah in joint third. Last year’s top boys’ name, Oliver, only made it to joint ninth place in the county, alongside Ethan, while Rory and Ruiaridh were joint seventh.

In the girls’ baby names, Sophie was a clear winner.

Ella and Freya were joint third, while nation’s favourite Olivia was joint eighth along with eight others.

The top ten for boys was: 1= Harris and Jack; 3=Charlie, Jacob, James, Noah; 7=Rory, Ruaridh; 9=Aaron, Ethan, Oliver.

The top ten for girls was: 1 Sophie; 2 Emily; 3=Ella, Freya; 5 Isla; 6= Jessica, Millie; 8= Alice, Amelia, Aria, Ava, Lucy, Molly, Olivia, Poppy, Robyn.
