A MUM-OF-THREE will tick off her 30th charity challenge in less than 12 months today (Saturday) to round off a remarkable fundraising year.

Sarah Horsburgh decided to mark her 30th birthday by taking part in 30 challenges, ranging from a Tough Mudder and Total Warrior to 10-kilometre runs.

Already, she has raised more than £1,600 for Simpsons Special Care Babies – a charity very close to Sarah’s heart.

She said: “In October 2009, my second daughter Erin was born 10 weeks prematurely.

“She spent a substantial amount of time within the neonatal unit in the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary before being discharged in November 2009.

“In March 2014, my youngest daughter Jess was born 14 weeks premature and, again, spent a substantial amount of time within the same neonatal unit, around 12 weeks.

“The charity that is based at the Edinburgh Neonatal Unit is called the Simpsons Special Care Baby Unit (SSCBU) and without their advice and support our journeys through the unit on both occasions would have been made much harder.

“This year saw me celebrate a special birthday, I turned 30, and to mark this occasion I decided to undertake 30 different endurance events throughout the year in order to raise money for the SSCBU.”

Sarah, who has a third daughter, Niamh, aged eight, has had a busy year, completing 29 different gruelling challenges.

Now, the end is in sight, with just the small matter of a 13-kilometre run at Foxlake Adventures, only a few miles along the road from her home on Dunbar’s Westpoint.

Sarah told the Courier: “This year has presented me with real physical, and mental challenges.

“I am generally a very active and fit person, but trying to squeeze all the training miles and sessions in while raising three young children has been a challenge in itself.

“Some of my events have been mentally gruelling, Dirty Weekend in May was a 200-obstacle race set over 20 miles, and Spartan in July was raced in the mist and rain, a gruelling 10-mile route set in the heart of the Pentlands.

“It has certainly been a harder challenge than I anticipated and my legs will be thankful of rest.

“There was one event in the Pentlands where I got quite badly injured and split open my Achilles.

“It was raining, it was misty and I thought I could get medical help to take me off the hill but I didn’t, I wanted my medal and t-shirt.”
