MOVES are under way to form a Friends of the APOGI group to continue the work which has already taken place on the Tranent project.

The APOGI (A Place of Great Importance) project was set up to develop green space between the Muirpark housing area and Steading View in the town.

It was officially opened in April this year but work on the project continues and organisers are now looking for community organisations to get together to create a Friends group to oversee it for the future.

The gateway entrance to the new park and community land is bounded by giant stone cairns which contain personal stories and mementoes given by local people, each one assigned an individual tally.

Later this month, everyone with a tally, each one of which was used in the construction of the cairns, is being invited to collect their own special commemorative tally in recognition of their contribution to the project.

Liz Hutchison, vice-chairwoman of the partnership, said all those involved would be able to collect the tally acknowledging their contribution during the annual public meeting of Fa’side Area Partnership at Ross High School on Tuesday, which starts at 7pm.

She said: “Presenting tallies to local people who took the time to provide us with their story or artefact is really important to the project.

“We appreciate that residents have shared their experiences and memories with us, allowing us to capture a piece of history in this unique way. The tally is a small way of saying thank you and will act as a reminder of their contribution to the project. We hope to see as many as possible at the meeting to accept them.”

The second phase of the project will be completed with story boards put in place on the site.

Then project organisers hope that establishing the Friends group will be the third phase in the APOGI journey.
