PROBLEMS with public transport across the county have been highlighted during a meeting between a county MSP and the chairman of the East Lothian Community Rail Partnership.

South of Scotland MSP Rachael Hamilton welcomed Harry Barker to the Scottish Parliament to discuss the well-publicised transport issues, including overcrowded trains, which affect the county.

Among Mr Barker’s concerns was the lack of connectivity and integration between rail and bus timetables, something, according to Mr Barker, the travelling public “desperately wanted”.

Another issue raised was overcrowding at rush hour on the county’s trains.

Last week, dozens of commuters were turned away from a rush-hour train to Edinburgh because it was full.

The cancellation of the 8.05am service from Prestonpans meant that the following train was extremely crowded.

By the time it reached Musselburgh – two stops further down the line – a number of commuters were unable to get on board.

Mrs Hamilton said: “Public transport is a crucial service to many in East Lothian; it is only right that the quality of this service is as the passengers expect.

“East Lothian would benefit from an integrated transport network.

“That means train links and bus links have to accommodate each other to create the best experience for the user.

“We also have to look at the issues of overcrowding and accessibility for disabled passengers.”
