POLICE are appealing for witnesses following two suspicious fires in Prestonpans.

Both incidents took place during late yesterday (Tuesday) evening, with officers first receiving a report of a bus shelter on fire at the west end of the High Street at about 9.40pm

The second incident, which took place at 11pm, saw rubbish set alight on a grassy area next to the garages in Summerlee.

No one was injured during either fire and officers are now investigating whether these are linked to recent wheelie bin fires in the area.

Sergeant Derek MacDonald, from Prestonpans Police Station, said: "These reckless acts of stupidity have resulted in significant damage to a bus shelter and to the grass at Summerlee, but the consequences could have been far worse had the fires taken hold and spread to nearby buildings or vehicles.

"I would ask anyone who remembers seeing any suspicious activity in these areas, or who can help us identify those responsible, to contact police immediately."

Anyone with information can contact Police Scotland on 101 or alternatively the charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
