A husband and wife who bought their local pub in North Berwick have won a Scottish Publican of the Year Award.

Brian and Carol Millar, who run the Golfers Rest on the town's High Street, came top out of 40 pubs in East Lothian, in the annual awards scheme run by leased operator Punch to celebrate the country’s great pubs.

They received a trophy and certificate at a special presentation dinner in recognition of the Golfers Rest’s strong performance and customer service in the East Lothian area.

Brian, a former lorry driver, said: “This was our local pub where we used to drink and when it came up for sale we decided to buy it. That was 11 years ago and we have not looked back.

“We have great staff here who have been with us for a number of years and we set high standards. We were not expecting this award, we’re proud to receive it.”

Their efforts also won praise from Brian Davidson, operations director at Punch.

He said: “Congratulations to Brian and Carol, their award is well deserved for their commitment to the pub and its customers.

"We believe in a genuine partnership approach to business and work with some extremely talented publicans.

"This was an opportunity to recognise this talent and to showcase the fantastic calibre of people that run our pubs.”

The Golfers Rest also recently received a Best Bar None gold award as part of the Safer Areas initiative by Police Scotland which rewards well managed, safe venues.
