MORE than 100 new homes could be built on the outskirts of Dunbar, with proposals potentially being lodged before the end of the year.

Gladman Developments held a public exhibition at the Dunmuir Hotel earlier this month, where they revealed plans for new homes at Newtonlees Farm.

The site, to the east of the town and south of the A1087, would include “around 100” new homes, with 1.3 hectares of the 8.3-hectare site set aside for an extension to Deer Park Cemetery, on the opposite side of the A1087.

More detailed plans are yet to be drawn up but a planning application could be submitted before the end of the year.

Jacquie Bell, vice-chairwoman of the town’s community council, was one of more than 20 people who visited the exhibition.

She had reservations about the plans and said: “It will put more pressure on that side of town and put extra pressure on Spott Road and Queens Road in one direction.

“In the other direction, people going south, it is putting more pressure on the cement works junction on the A1, which we all know is dangerous.”

Mrs Bell also highlighted the lack of a clear route for youngsters to walk or cycle to either Dunbar Primary School or Dunbar Grammar School.

Instead, it would mean homeowners driving the youngsters to school and adding more traffic to the roads, she said.

Four potential access points to the site were highlighted in the exhibition. That would see traffic enter the site from off the A1087, as well as from the south and two entry points at the north of the site.

A Sustainable Urban Drainage System (SUDS) pond could also be included in the south-east corner of the site.

Meanwhile, an L-shaped piece of ground, which wraps around the existing Deer Park Cemetery, has been highlighted in the LDP as a potential extension to the existing cemetery.

Earlier this year, councillors gave the go-ahead to plans for 240 new homes in a field to the north-west of the site.

Sixty of the homes at that site will be classed as “affordable housing”, although none of them will be council homes.

The latest site is not one of those identified in the recently-approved Local Development Plan (LDP), which sets out East Lothian Council’s planning strategy, sites and policies to guide and manage future development within the county.
