A NORTH Berwick youngster received a great surprise when a former Ryder Cup star rewarded her entrepreneurial spirit by gifting her a set of custom-made golf clubs.

Jasmin Bouverie, 14, had set up a stall outside her North Berwick home, which overlooks the West Links golf course, and was selling lemonade and tasty brownies to raise money for new clubs.

Former Ryder Cup ace Ronan Rafferty, who was in the county taking part in the Prostate Cancer UK Scottish Senior Open at Archerfield Links, initially handed over £20 to the youngster.

Cassie Bouverie, Jasmin’s mum, explained: “He gave her £20 for his lemonade and brownie, then announced on second thoughts he would give her a new set of golf clubs!”

Jasmin, a pupil at North Berwick High School, was ‘measured up’ at the club’s pro shop by Oliver Huish, son of club professional Martyn.

Said Cassie: “We never really thought it would happen but, true to his word, the clubs later arrived.”

Martyn Huish said: “We were playing in a pro-am and Jasmin was selling lemonade and one of the guys asked what she was saving the money for.

“When she said it was for a new set of clubs, Ronan said he would be able to help her out.

“She came in and made sure the clubs were going to be right for her, and they arrived last week.

“Jasmin was obviously delighted and we were delighted to be able to help.

“Anything to encourage kids to keep playing golf is greatly welcomed.”

A new set of Golphin clubs arrived last week, and Cassie said everyone was thrilled.

She added: “We couldn’t quite believe the whole story when Jasmin came screeching into the house announcing she had met this man called Ronan and he was going to give her clubs.

“It is an incredible gesture from Ronan.”
