THIEVES broke into a house while its owners were on holiday and stole their car.

Police are appealing for witnesses after the break-in at a property in Gavin's Lee, Tranent, between Sunday and early yesterday morning.

They were called to the house shortly before 8am yesterday after the owners arrived home to find their silver VW Golf, registration VN61 FUU, missing.

Meanwhile, police are also investigating an attempted break-in to the professional shop at Musselburgh Golf Club, Monktonhall last night.

The incident, which they have not ruled out as being linked to the Tranent break-in, saw those involved unable to gain entry to the building, however the door frame was damaged.

Police want to hear from anyone who was in the area of the golf club around 11:30pm and witnessed any suspicious behaviour.

Police Constable Karen Hamilton, who is based in Musselburgh police station, said: "Our enquiries into both incidents are ongoing and we are pursuing various lines of inquiry. However, given the nature of these offences and where they occurred we cannot rule out the possibility that they are linked.

"Today, I urge anyone with information that can assist with our investigation to contact police immediately.

"Both incidents have left the victims extremely disappointed and we want to do everything we can to ensure those responsible are swiftly arrested.

"If you have seen the silver VW Golf or remember any suspicious activity in or around Musselburgh Golf Club in recent days, please contact police on 101. Alternatively an anonymous report can be made through the charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."
