FIRST Minister Nicola Sturgeon was in the county today (Wednesday), as she visited Windygoul Primary School in Tranent.

During the two-hour visit this morning, Ms Sturgeon met with headteacher Avril Wilson, while local MP George Kerevan was also in attendance.

The First Minister visited with a team of experts, who have formed the new International Council of Education Advisors.

They heard from pupils and staff about their experiences, reflected on the findings of the recent Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) review, and discuss measures outlined in the government’s education delivery plan to close the attainment gap and reform the education system.

Nicola Sturgeon, First Minister, said: “The 10 members of the International Council of Education Advisers have extensive experience advising governments around the world on school improvement.

"Education is this government’s top priority, and I am delighted to welcome the panel to Scotland to showcase the strengths of our education system and hear their thoughts on our plans for reform."

Also at the school were Fa'side ward councillors Kenny McLeod, Donald Grant and Shamin Akhtar, East Lothian Council's spokesperson for education and children's wellbeing.

She was delighted with how the visit went, and told the Courier: "It was a fantastic opportunity for Windygoul Primary School to show off the fantastic work they are doing under the leadership of Avril Wilson.

"It is the only primary school the First Minister and her team of advisors will be visiting."

Mr Kerevan, meanwhile added: "Verdict from international educationalists was that the schools is of an amazing standard educationally."
