ONE of Scotland's biggest bands will headline the first-ever Dunbar Daytripper Festival this weekend.

Idlewild, who have had five top 40 albums, as well as more than a dozen top 40 singles, take to the stage at the new music and food festival on Saturday afternoon.

Their involvement came through manager Bruce Craigie, the band’s manager, who is based in Dunbar.

Alan and Claire Gray, who run Cafe Lauderdale, met with Bruce, who agreed to ask the band to play.

Rod Jones, Idlewild guitarist, told the Courier: “Bruce is based in Dunbar, so he told us about it and we liked the idea.

“We are looking to play in places we’ve never been before, and although we’ve been to Dunbar many, many times, we’ve never played there.”

The Edinburgh-based band, have had five top 40 albums, with Everything Ever Written released last year and reaching number 20.

On performing at the Dunbar Daytripper Festival, 39-year-old Jones added: “I think we’re all really looking forward to it.

“It is like a home town gig for us.

“You never know what to expect but I’m sure it’ll be a good gig.

“We’ve got a hardcore of fans who follow us so I’d imagine there will be a few familiar faces in the front row.”

Formed in 1995, Idlewild have undergone a number of personnel changes, with bassist Andrew Mitchell and keyboard player Lucci Rossi joining in 2014.

Lead singer Roddy Wooble, Jones and drummer Colin Newton remain from the original line-up, but Jones believes the changes have served the band well.

He added: “It’s been more than 20 years since we started and I feel much more creative. We had got to a point where we needed time off but it feels like a new chapter.”

Local acts Noah Noah, Whitehill Grove, Firefly Fortyfive, Alan Gray, Erin Mitchell and Polly Phillips will also be on the bill.
