A HOST of county pubs have been recognised for their work by winning the Best Bar None awards.

Now in its third year in the county, the scheme is part of the Safer Areas initiatives rolled out throughout Scotland by Police Scotland and rewards well-managed venues.

Being part of the scheme shows the venue and its staff have met a level of standards that ensure a safe atmosphere.

Gold award winners this year were The Pine Marten in Dunbar, Queen Margaret University’s (QMU) students’ union, the Golfers Rest in North Berwick and the Dunmuir Hotel in Dunbar.

They were delighted to have been given the gold award.

Karen Smith and Carol Millar, from the Golfers Rest, told the Courier: “It’s the second time we’ve been in for it and last year we got silver so it’s nice to get the gold this year.”

Arin Podder, commercial services manager at QMU, added: “I’m very pleased to have the gold award and it is a great achievement for us.

“It is a good way to reflect the hard work of the staff.”

Meanwhile, silver awards were also given to the Coalgate Inn in Ormiston, Prestonpans Labour Club, The Golf Tavern in Haddington and the Thorntree Inn, Cockenzie.

A bronze award was handed out to the Bayswell Park Hotel and Spa, in Dunbar.

Neil Fisher, hotel manager at the Bayswell, added: “It’s nice to see our achievements recognised. It is a big achievement for us, and for the staff.”

Chief Inspector Matt Paden, area police commander for East Lothian, said: “I’d like to congratulate all the award winners of the 2015-16 Best Bar None scheme and highlight their commitment to creating a safer environment for customers in East Lothian.

“These awards are recognition for the efforts of all staff at the various premises and recognise their hard work in ensuring the public can enjoy a safe and welcoming environment.”

Applications for the 2016-17 scheme open shortly. Anyone interested can register with PC Allen Paul, Police Scotland.
