A MAJOR air and sea rescue operation along the Longniddry/Port Seton coast last night was called off, after the missing woman was found. . . in Glasgow.

North Berwick Coastguard Rescue, North Berwick and Kinghorn RNLI crews, police and fire and rescue, Border Search and Rescue and a Coastguard rescue helicopter were all involved

Police were first alerted to reports of a missing woman at about 8.30pm, and after a search of more than three hours, it was confirmed she had been traced more than 50 miles away.

The Courier understands the woman had travelled east from Glasgow, and was not staying in the county. It is not yet known why the woman was in the county, or who raised the alarm.

The low-flying helicopter circled Cockenzie and Port Seton and much of the nearby coastline from about 11pm, with its high-powered search lights and noise leading to much late-night interest from residents.

At Longniddry, the emergency services set up their HQ and torchlit foot patrols of the beach and the John Muir Way were launched.

North Berwick RNLI posted on Facebook: "The missing person was located safe and well on land and all involved stood down at 12.30am. Boat and crew returned to station. Well done to all involved."
