POLICE have vowed to keep monitoring a county quarry after further reports of people swimming there.

A number of incidents were initially highlighted by police at the Haddington and Lammermuir Community and Police Partnership (CAPP) meeting in June.

Officials at Bangley Quarry, to the north of Haddington, had raised concerns that people had been trespassing and swimming.

Constable Lynn Black, who chairs the CAPP meetings, had set the issue as one of three priorities in June and gave members an update at a recent meeting.

She said: “We have had a couple of formal complaints phoned into us by members of the public.

“I don’t know if that was in response to reading in the Courier about youths going there on really hot days.

“We have gone up and at one point the youths had left and on another they were leaving.

“It was explained to them about the dangers.”

Officers had promised to speak at local schools and community meetings following the initial incidents earlier this summer.

Sergeant Scott Nicolson, of Haddington Police Station, previously highlighted the dangers of swimming in a quarry.

He said: “The water is very deep, there can be steep drop-offs, flooded equipment, submerged wire and waste, and the water can be freezing cold.

“Our community officers will conduct regular patrols of the area but I’d urge people, especially teenagers and younger children, to avoid trespassing in quarries.

“I’d also ask parents to make their children aware of the risks, as what might seem like a bit of fun can quickly turn into something serious.”

PC Black decided to keep the issue as one of the group’s priorities, at least until their next meeting in September.
