A TEENAGER is honouring her late mum who battled cancer for more than a decade.

Jodie Watson’s mum Kim was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2000.

She was then diagnosed with secondary breast cancer and ovarian cancer, which spread over the years, before she passed away in 2014.

Jodie, 18, told the Courier: “I decided to arrange a disco-type fundraiser in memory of my mum.

“I decided in February I wanted to give back the time and effort Macmillan nurses give to people in need.

“I personally don’t think Macmillan Cancer Support gets the recognition it deserves for all they do.

“They helped my mum come to terms with the fact she had cancer for 14 years, helped her cope throughout that and not only did they help my mum, they helped my sister and I too.”

The fundraiser takes place in Haddington’s Corn Exchange this evening (Friday), from 7.30pm.

Tickets, costing £10 for over-18s and £5 for under-18s, are available from Shortcuts, Looks Hair Design, Gibsons or by contacting Jodie on Facebook.

Jodie added: “I haven’t set myself a fundraising target but I hope to raise a large amount to give back to these lovely people what they gave out.

“I know people who are fighting and people who have sadly lost their battle who would like to thank them, so I’m arranging this to do that for them.”

Jodie, of Abbots View, encouraged as many people as possible to go along to the fundraiser.

She added: “As a person, my mum was the most down-to-earth, genuine person anyone could ever meet.

“She would always help others before herself and she’d never complain, although 90 per cent of the time she was in pain.

“My mum worked in Tesco as a cashier for 12 years and she loved her job, she had so many ‘favourite customers’.

“My mum wanted to reach the age of 50 and she did on April 28, 2014, but sadly passed away on August 3, 2014.

“It was a sad loss to many people and I think it always will be.

“But she is remembered and I’ve taken it upon myself to arrange this Macmillan event in memory of her because I know she’d want these people to get the recognition they deserve.”
