MEMBERS of the public are being asked for their views on proposals to reduce the speed limit through much of East Linton.

Discussions between the village’s community council and East Lothian Council to reduce the speed limit from 30mph to 20mph have been ongoing for a number of months.

Now a consultation has been launched for an experimental 20mph limit.

Judith Priest, chairwoman of Dunpender Community Council, said: “Every household has got a letter showing the extent to which it is being proposed.”

Mrs Priest told the Courier she had lived on East Linton High Street for 40 years and the volume of traffic had increased throughout that time.

Previous surveys showed 4,000 vehicles were using the roads each day and there had been regular calls for the speed limit to be dropped to increase pedestrian safety.

The consultation was launched last Monday and runs until August 12.

According to the document: “East Lothian Council gives a high priority to road safety and as part of this ongoing commitment is considering the introduction of an experimental 20mph speed limit on the majority of roads in East Linton.

“We are carrying out a non-statutory consultation to determine the level of support before developing this proposal further.

“Residents in the streets covered have already received a letter telling them about the proposal and inviting them to submit feedback.”

Most streets in the village, including School Road, Longstone Avenue and McCall Gardens, would fall under the scheme (see image below).

East Lothian Courier:

Only a section into East Linton on the B1407, off the old A1 to the west of the village, and east of Lauder Place at the junction of Mill Wynd, would not see a change in speed limit.
