A TRANENT man is facing a prison sentence after he was found with nearly two kilos of cannabis worth over £6,500.

Alistair McGhee was found with the large stash of the drug at his home at Kemps End in 2014.

McGhee, 37, had grouped together with others to buy all the lighting, heating and fans needed to cultivate the Class B drug.

But McGhee stood in the dock alone on Monday, where he was due to stand trial.

Co-accused Sarah Oddy, of the same address, had her pleas of not guilty to producing and supplying cannabis accepted by the Crown.

McGhee pleaded guilty to a charge of supplying cannabis moments before the trial was due to get under way at Edinburgh Sheriff Court. A charge of producing the drug was dropped Fiscal depute Aiden Higgins told the court that police officers uncovered 1,894 grams of cannabis during a search of McGhee’s home in October 2014.

Mr Higgins said: “A total of five people, including the accused, had effectively contributed to a common fund to raise the money to buy the equipment.

“And when the police searched the accused’s home they recovered all the [hydroponic] equipment usually associated with growing cannabis.

“This group raised the money and bought the equipment but thereafter it fell to the accused alone to grow the cannabis. The crop and the profits would then be shared with the partners.”

Mr Higgins added the weight and value of the drugs found was 1.894 kg, which had a value of £6,550.

Solicitor Mary Moultrie said there was a confiscation order being carried out on her client due to the amount of cash seized by police officers during the search. She decided not to give further mitigation until sentencing next month.
