A MAN was knocked out and robbed in broad daylight on a secluded cycle path.

At about 3pm on Sunday, the 24-year-old was making his way to work by heading east on a footpath found off Whitecraig Road, Whitecraig, opposite the Mercat Grill restaurant.

As he was passing the entrance to the southbound cyclepath, a male engaged him in conversation and led him under the arch into a secluded area.

The male then punched him to his head, resulting in the victim falling to the ground and losing consciousness.

When he awoke, he discovered that his wallet and mobile phone had been stolen. He raised the alarm with police after making his way home.

Police are now carrying out inquiries and are appealing to anyone who can help identify the suspect.

The male attacker is described as white, with a large build and dark hair. He was wearing a cream coloured jacket and spoke with an Irish accent.

Detective Constable William Dickson, who is based in Dalkeith Police Station, said: “Our inquiries into this matter are ongoing and I urge anyone who was in the area of Whitecraig Road between 3pm and 5pm on Sunday to contact Police.

“The victim required treatment for a minor injury and was left badly shaken.”

Those with relevant information are asked to contact police on 101 or alternatively the charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
